Google’s New Favicon

Wow!  And I thought I disliked the previous one!  For those living under a rock, Google changed it’s favicon for the second time in about 6 months.  The first change is detailed here:

And now looking at this second one:

I can see that the reason I hated the first change is that it was a big departure from their established brand.  Grey and blue aren’t exactly their standard rainbow of primary colors.

With this second iteration, they bring back the rainbow.  And now I realize the real reason why I hate both designs.  It is the lower case, serif “g”.  To me, Google has always been “G” and not “g“.
